Real Life. “My Friend Is Jealous of My Husband and Baby”: It's All Because I Can't Go Clubbing With Her Anymore

I have a best friend, Maria, who has been with me since high school.

We went through fire, water, and the bumps of life together. We went to the same college together, rented an apartment together. We supported each other, went through hardships together, and celebrated victories together. I remember how we once swore to each other that we would never stop talking to each other.

Of course, it was just a joke. A few years later I met Michael, my future husband. At first we were just dating and I didn't even think that something serious could happen between us. Maria and I joked all the time: “Imagine, that's my future husband.” Time passed and I started to realize that things with Michael were real, and when Maria noticed it too, she even seemed jealous of me. “You forgot about your friend,” she was outraged. “Now you spend all your time with this Michael.”

A year after we started living together, Michael proposed to me. I accepted. At the wedding, Maria cried and said she hoped we would still be friends and that our communication would not end after my wedding. Of course, I assured her that it would.

At my wedding, my friend met my husband's cousin, and a few weeks later they started dating. Maria was estranged from me at the time, which is probably why she didn't care that we started to get in less contact. Incidentally, she and Andrzej had been dating for quite a long time, almost four years. During that time, Michał and I had a son. And of course, now, as a wife and mother, I couldn't spend all my free time partying like I used to. And I was fine with that.

Yes, I remembered with pleasure how much fun we had with Maria and other friends when we were students, but now I was no longer the girl who was only interested in parties and clubs. I liked my new social role. And I knew that things would never be the same again. Only my friend didn't seem to understand.

Maria broke up with Andrzej and to calm down, she decided she had to go out. The first day after the divorce, she called me and said she would be there in half an hour. Honestly, I wasn't too happy about it. Since it was a weekday, my husband had to get up for work the next day and I had to put the baby to bed early. But Michael and I talked and decided that if Maria was really down, we should stay with her. My friend came with wine and sweets. I couldn't eat any of those. Maria was very upset when she heard that.

We sat in the kitchen for a few hours and then I told her it was time to go to bed. My friend got annoyed and said that she had actually planned to go to a club with me. I just laughed and asked what club she was talking about, since I have a child and a husband who has to get up for work in the morning.

Marysia then reminded me that I had promised her that I would still be her friend after the wedding. When she didn't achieve her goal, she left offended. Then at night she recorded a long audio message to me saying that I was no longer her friend, that I had cheated on her, and so on. And now I don't know what to do. I don't want to lose Marysia, who has been my friend for so many years, but at the same time I know I won't be able to give her what she wants.
