Real Life. “My Ex-Husband Accidentally Transferred Money to Me Instead of His Girlfriend”: I'm Not Going to Pay It Back

I divorced my first husband, Waldek, almost three years ago.

Our marriage didn't last long, we didn't even make it to our first anniversary. I had just finished my master's degree and was starting my adult life, and here he was – handsome and very charismatic. I fell in love, put on rose-colored glasses to stay in that candy-bouquet period forever and didn't notice anything around me.

Even the fact that a narcissist and manipulator was hiding under the mask of a rich handsome man. Waldek moved in with me within a few weeks, and I served him fully. Everything, from the household to the finances, was my responsibility. In return, he promised me true love, and I believed him.

The wedding was rushed, Waldek deceived me that he loved me and wanted to call me his wife, not his girlfriend. Oh, how romantic it seemed to me. Only now do I realize that he simply tricked me. Generally speaking, he did not treat me well. Our idyll did not last even a year: Waldek quickly got bored with me, because he got everything he wanted. After all, I regularly gave him money, among other things. On average, he would act out these scenes once every few weeks.

At first he looked somber and silent for an hour. Of course I started asking him what was wrong. After much persuasion to share his troubles with me, he finally said something like, “Oh honey, my car broke down again!” and I transferred the money to his card. Of course, the scammer figured me out quickly and knew I would believe anything he said.

He wasn't embarrassed, even when I saw him driving half an hour after our conversation — he said that the car was fixed and that I had saved him, saying that if it weren't for me, he would have been in trouble.

It's obvious that I didn't expect a refund, so when I received almost 40 thousand from him on my card, I was very surprised. First, I received a message about a transfer from Waldemar D. – from him. I didn't know what to think. My first thought was – wow, his conscience has awakened and he decided to return my money! But then I started receiving calls from an unknown number and begging for a refund.

Waldek was clearly panicking, the messages were confusing. I tried to understand what was happening and finally decided to pick up the phone. “Kasia, hello, you have to return this money urgently, I accidentally transferred it to you!” said a long-forgotten voice. “I wanted to surprise my girlfriend!”

I called back, confirming without hesitation that I would send him the money. The influx of calls and messages stopped. I really wanted to return the money, but my finger was raised and I thought about it. Did he have the right to demand the money back? After all, he shamelessly cheated on me and promised to pay off his debts. There was only one fifth left! I decided not to transfer anything. Half an hour later he started calling me again, but I didn't answer. The messages changed from pleading to pleading for remorse, and then to threats.

After another hour, Waldek got tired and stopped writing to me. His tirade ended with death wishes, accusations of theft, and other things. Then, apparently rested, he called again, and I picked up the receiver: “I knew you were a vile thief!” he shouted into the phone.

He demanded a refund, but I charged him — since we're settling accounts like this — how much he owes me and finally he backed off, realizing that he owes me much more than the amount I accidentally transferred…
