Real-life. “Mother-in-law Moved In With Us and Started Having Guests at Our Home”: Now We Have to Sleep Outside

My husband comes from a large family. He has three brothers.

Their parents divorced when the boys were already married. My husband and I have a large family, we run a farm and are building a house. But my mother-in-law never helps us. My husband leaves for work early and comes home late; cleaning, cooking, children – everything falls on me.

My husband's mother doesn't have any money for us, and she can't work because she's sick, so I also have to take care of my mother-in-law. I have to take her to hospitals in the region because she was recently diagnosed with an illness. Her other sons don't have enough time or money for that.

My mother gives her pension to her grandchildren, the children of her other sons, and my children are left out. I was very offended by my mother-in-law's disrespectful attitude towards my children and me, but I didn't want to argue or upset my husband. He loves us very much and cares for me and the girls. I know that many people in the village envy our family life, but my patience is not infinite. My brothers-in-law and their wives started coming to stay with us at their mother's house while we were at work. The children milked the cows, and the guests ate everything I had prepared in the morning. Then I listen to the girls complain that their rooms and beds are occupied by aunts and uncles.

Guests sleep in the nursery, the children in our bed, and we should probably sleep in the barn, with the cows. We spent that night on a bench in the gazebo. In the morning I told my husband that this was the last time his relatives would force us out of our own bed. I entered the house, making a terrible commotion. I woke my mother-in-law and gave a series of instructions for her to take care of. I decided that Leszek and I were going to work soon, so Mommy better get up and make breakfast quickly.

I added firmly that the empty fridge had to be refilled, because the girls would be getting up soon and I had to make them breakfast. My mother-in-law was outraged, tried to protest, and when I showed firmness, accused me of heartlessness and lack of hospitality and left, slamming the door. The whole argument woke up the rest of the “guests” who were occupying my children's rooms. They started to demand breakfast, but I just opened the empty fridge, showed it the inside and told them not to be embarrassed. They also left outraged. Since then I have had peace and quiet, we all got our beds back.
