Real-life. “Mother-in-law decided to move into our apartment”: Even though we made it clear that we didn't have the space

It all started with a phone call from my mother-in-law, Mrs. Krystyna.

Our apartment was small, but for Piotr and me it was a dream come true. A small kitchen, a cozy living room, a bedroom, and a room for our daughter – enough to live in harmony. I didn't expect our peaceful space to become a battlefield for boundaries and respect for our decisions.

It all started with a phone call from my mother-in-law, Mrs. Krystyna. She was always a dominant person, who liked to have the last word. This time, however, her tone was full of drama.

– „Piotr, I have to move in with you. I sold my apartment to help your brother, but he doesn't have the space to accept me now. You are my only option.”

Piotr looked at me, clearly worried. We knew the situation was difficult, but our apartment was simply too small. We had one bed in the bedroom, the daughter's room was tiny, and the living room served as a place to relax and work.

„Mom, that's impossible. We really don't have the space,– Piotr said firmly.
But my mother-in-law wasn't going to let it go.

„It's only for a while! You can't leave me without a roof over my head. Anka, I think you understand?”

I could feel the stress starting to build inside me. I knew that if we agreed, our lives would turn into chaos.

– „Mrs. Krystyna, I really sympathize with your situation, but our apartment is too small. Maybe we can find another solution?”

– „There is no other solution!” – cut it short. – „I'll come over this weekend.”

Despite our protests, on Saturday my mother-in-law showed up at the door with suitcases and an expression of unwavering determination on her face. She moved into the living room, occupying the couch, which from then on became her „room”. Our privacy disappeared in the blink of an eye.

The problems began on the very first evening. My mother-in-law began criticizing our decisions regarding raising our daughter, organizing the apartment, and even eating.

– “Anka, you really let Zosia watch cartoons before bed? It's unacceptable!”

– “Why do you always cook such simple dishes? Piotr deserves something better after work.”

I tried to stay calm, but with each passing day I felt like I was losing control of my own life.

One day when I came home from work, I saw my mother-in-law rearranging the furniture in the living room.

– „What are you doing, Mom?– asked Peter, trying to hide his irritation.

„I’m rearranging it a bit so there’s more room for me. You can't live in such chaos.”

I couldn't stand it.

– „Mrs. Krystyna, this is our home. I understand that it's difficult for you, but please respect that we live here.”

My mother-in-law looked at me with a cold smile.

– „Anka, don't exaggerate. I do this for your own good.”

The next few days were a nightmare. My mother-in-law imposed her opinion on everything, and Piotr and I began to argue more and more often. I was at the end of my rope, but Piotr didn't want to hurt his mother, so he avoided a serious conversation.

The climax came on Saturday, when my mother-in-law invited her friends over for coffee without asking us. Our apartment, which barely fit the three of us, was filled with strangers. I felt like I couldn't take it anymore.

– “Mrs. Krystyna, we have to talk,” I said when the guests had left. – „It can't go on like this. We have to find another solution. This apartment is too small for all of us.”

My mother-in-law looked at me with resentment.

– „I really can't believe you're so selfish, Anka. I just want a place to live, and you're throwing me out on the street.”

– „This isn't selfishness. This is caring for my family and our lives. Please, let's try to find another place for you.”

After much discussion and tension, my mother-in-law agreed to move into a temporary apartment that we helped her find. Our relationship remained cool for a long time, but over time it began to improve.
