Real Life. “I'm 53, Married for 26 Years”: One Day I Realized I Deserved Better

I am 53 years old, a grown woman, experienced. I was married for 26 years, but I finally got divorced because I realized I deserved better.

I waited until my son went to college and immediately left my husband.

-What are you thinking? Who will want you now? – my husband told me then. Before, I rented a small apartment from my mother to tenants. My husband and I thought we would pass it on to our son, but I ended up moving in myself.

My son is young, he will earn his own living. My husband tried to convince me to come back, but I was determined not to. A year passed and I started to pay attention to other men. My friends thought I was crazy, but I simply wanted to feel like a woman – beautiful and desirable.

A few years later I met Ludwik. He lived in the building next door and we sometimes went for walks together in the nearby park. Finally he decided to ask me out on a date. I insisted that we meet at my house. I wanted to impress him with my culinary talents.

As agreed, he came at seven in the evening. By then I was ready: I got dressed and set the table. I opened the door and he was standing there without flowers or a box of chocolates. I couldn't take it anymore:

-You came empty-handed?

-We're not kids anymore

-Even more so! Goodbye!

I slammed the door in his face. I was overcome with anger. How can a grown man behave like that? But over the years I've learned one thing – you have to value yourself. And if a man behaves like this from the very beginning, there is no way to fix it.

Later he told everyone in the yard that I was arrogant and would be alone for the rest of my life. But I think it's better to be alone than to be limited by an insolent boor.

One day my ex-husband called me, said he had changed and begged me to come back. But for now I'll think about it, maybe I'll meet a real man. Are they extinct? Do you think I did the right thing?
