Real-life. “If your pension is too small, go to work”: I told my neighbor who was begging outside the nearest store

I have been retired for a few years now. I would love to work longer, but my workplace has changed management, which only wants young and green employees.

Despite this, I do not complain. Yes, the amount of my pension leaves much to be desired, so I seize almost every opportunity to earn extra money. At first I babysat my neighbors' children for money, and when they didn't need a nanny anymore, I got a job at a large supermarket.

Since then I've been putting out merchandise there for a few hours a day. They pay me God knows how much – cashiers get more. But then again, they hire younger women to work the register, and my job isn't to argue with customers and count money for twelve hours. And the work on the floor, although physical, doesn't require much strength. That's why I'm healthy enough to do it.

As a rule, I don't accept help from my son. Instead, let him support my grandchildren. After all, today's children need a lot of things – nice clothes, phones, tutors, etc. But not everyone has such a position. Take my neighbor from the stairwell, Lucyna. She's the same age as me, retired even earlier, and is in better health – I've only seen her once in our clinic! At the same time, every time we meet, Lucyna complains about how bad her life is. Her pension is small, and her children also give her a pittance.

I tried to subtly hint to my neighbor that she was able to change the situation, but it was easier for her to do nothing and suffer, so I stopped listening to her complaints, citing urgent matters. And I really am fed up with them. But the neighbor was not a loser and found other grateful ears. When I come to the entrance, Lucyna is always sitting on the bench and complaining to other neighbors about her fate.

Generally speaking, I don't care. Usually I smile to myself and go home in silence. But recently Lucyna has thought of a way to improve her financial situation. Only it turned out to be so dishonest that I broke my rules and spoke out about her actions.

The situation was as follows. I was on my way to the clinic, and on the way I passed the nearest grocery store. And suddenly I saw Lucyna standing at the entrance, casually begging for alms from passers-by. And she described her life to them even more tragically than to us. She said that not only did her children not help her with money, but they also took most of it. This lie made me feel very disgusted! I had seen my neighbor's children several times and they did not look like sadists at all. In addition, my neighbor told me that they supported her financially.

“Don't listen to that actress from the burned down theater! No one is hurting her,” I warned several passers-by. “How do you know?” Lucyna burst into tears that were so fake that those people didn't believe her and of course didn't give her anything. After making sure that there were no naive onlookers nearby, Lucyna immediately became angry and attacked me with angry reproaches. Then I remembered the doctor's appointment and rushed to him without answering.

“What's the point of arguing with that lying and lazy woman?” I thought at the time. But neither that day nor the next did I see Lucyna near that store. Maybe she realized something, or maybe she just moved to another place, but this incident still haunts me for some reason.
