Real Life. “I made everyone mad at my son's wedding”: The newlyweds expected a generous gift from me

I have been living in Germany for a long time, where I have a husband. My daughter lives with me, she is an adult, works and has a boyfriend.

In the meantime, my son stayed in Poland and recently decided to get married. He and Ola have been together for two years. They started living together almost immediately. It didn't bother me, because I understood how lonely Rysio was.

A year ago, my son decided to settle his relationship with Ola. A few months later, he confessed: “I'm going to propose to Ola!”

I couldn't argue with him in this situation. Soon, I was invited to a wedding. I had been planning to buy my son an apartment for a long time and had already saved up the necessary amount. I thought that a wedding would be a great opportunity for such a gift.

I came a few months before the wedding to buy a property and help with the wedding preparations. However, I didn't tell anyone about my surprise. However, when I was signing the notarial deed at the notary's, an acquaintance accidentally saw me. Soon almost everyone in town knew that I had bought an apartment.

I was supposed to hand over the keys at the wedding reception in a restaurant, but a few weeks before the event I changed my mind. I had a serious reason… When I started helping my future daughter-in-law choose a dress and other details, I noticed how Ola managed Rysio's money. She spent it without considering the budget.

She didn't try to save at all: she bought an expensive dress, spent thousands on a florist, and booked the most expensive hosts and singers. My son returned from the army the day before the wedding. Everything was ready. At the ceremony, everyone expected me to hand over the keys to the apartment. Instead, I walked up to the newlyweds and handed them an envelope. Inside was a thousand dollars, and that was it.

My daughter-in-law was very offended and didn't speak to me for the rest of the evening. Later, many people started asking me questions, but I wasn't going to explain anything. I decided to keep the apartment. After all, I had honestly worked for it, and my daughter-in-law seemed to expect everything to fall into her hands. Do you think I did the right thing?
