Real Life. “I Discovered I Was Adopted During a Hospital Visit”: My Biological Parents Are Still Alive

When I got to the ward, the nurse informed me that my mother was undergoing tests.

It was a cold morning when I entered the hospital to visit my mother. She was in the cardiology ward after a severe heart attack, and I felt helpless seeing her so weak. She was everything to me – my rock, my friend, a woman I always admired for her strength and love. Little did I know that day would change my life forever.

When I got to the ward, the nurse informed me that my mother was undergoing tests. I decided to wait in the waiting room. When I reached for the phone, I noticed something lying on the chair next to me – an envelope. It shouldn't be there, it looked like medical documents.

„Someone must have left it here&ndquo; I thought. But when I looked at the name on the envelope, my heart sank. It had my name and surname on it.

Surprised, I opened the envelope. Inside were medical records I had never seen before. Genetic test results that clearly indicated that my parents, whom I loved and considered my family, were not my biological parents.

I couldn't breathe. The world spun, and a thousand questions popped into my head. How was that possible? ? Why didn't anyone tell me? ? Did Mom know these documents were here? ? At that moment, the nurse called me to Mom's room. I put the documents in my bag and went into my room, trying to compose myself.

Mom was lying on the bed, looking weak, but she smiled at the sight of me.

– „Hi, honey. It's so good to have you.”

I tried to smile back, but the weight of what I had just discovered wouldn't let me function normally. I sat down next to her bed, holding her hand.

– „Mom… I have to ask you something. Is it true that I'm not your biological daughter? ?”

Her face paled, and the hand in mine trembled slightly. She was silent for a moment, looking at me with pain in her eyes.

– „How do you know about this?– she asked quietly.

– „I found the documents. In the hospital. Tell me the truth, please.”

Mom sighed and closed her eyes, as if gathering strength to face this question.

– „It's true” she finally said. – „We adopted you when you were only a few weeks old. Your biological parents couldn't take care of you. But we loved you from day one, Ania. You're our daughter, no matter what.”

Her words were full of love, but I felt betrayed. Why didn't they ever tell me? Were they afraid I'd stop loving them? Or were they trying to protect me from the truth?

– “Who are my biological parents?” – I asked, although I was afraid of the answer.

Mom hesitated, but finally said:

– “They're still alive. They're a young couple who were in a difficult situation back then. They couldn't raise you, but they always wanted you to have a good life.”

After that conversation, I couldn't sit still. With the help of documents and hospital workers, I managed to find contact with my biological parents. They lived in a small town, just a few dozen kilometers from my home. I decided to go see them, even though I didn't know what to expect.

When I knocked on the door of their modest home, a woman with eyes that immediately seemed familiar to me opened the door. They looked at me with the same mixture of fear and hope that I felt in my heart.

– “Ania…?” – she asked, as if she couldn't believe it was me.

– “Yes, it's me. I wanted to meet you.”

We spent the whole day talking. I learned that I was the fruit of young love, but financial difficulties and lack of support forced them to make the decision to give me up for adoption. They regretted it their whole lives, but were grateful that I ended up with a family that loved me.

Now that I know the whole truth, I'm trying to understand who I really am. I have two families—one that raised me and one that created me. It's a mix of pain, love, and hope that I'm still learning to accept. But I know this—as hard as the truth was to accept, it allowed me to discover a part of myself that I never knew before.
