Real Life. “I Always Knew Money Changed People”: My Wife Inherited an Inheritance and Won't Give Me Money to Start My Own Business

My wife Alina and I have been together for many years.

We had our differences, but we never argued about money. We earned about the same and shared the costs of everything. When we were both budding professionals, we had enough money only for the most basic needs. And then we could indulge ourselves.

We started going on vacations, buying nice clothes. For a few months we saved up for big purchases. The only conflict we had was when I bought a car. My salary was raised, I took out a loan and started paying it off myself. I invited my wife to join, but she refused, saying that her daughter needed tutors. “You women always come up with unnecessary expenses,” I laughed, but I didn't argue. However, when Alina decided to take driving lessons, I was surprised.

Yes, we have a good income, but we still have to manage somehow, to deny ourselves something. If we were richer, we could easily have two cars for the family. So we started talking about starting our own business. We talked and I started thinking seriously. I would like to open a coffee shop! It would be a steady stream of money for the family. Then I'll give the jeep to my wife — let it be so, and I'll buy myself an even better and more expensive one. The dreams of the business remained dreams, and life went on as usual. And unfortunately, there is room not only for joy, but also for sadness.

Alina's father died, my wife was not close to her father, but she was his only daughter. And his only heir. One evening she told me that in six months she would inherit a two-room apartment, a car and shares worth a good sum from her father. Of course I sympathized with Alina and was sorry that her father had passed away so early, but I was still happy to hear about the inheritance. I checked the value of his apartment and how much I could sell his car for. And then there were shares! And wings sprouted behind my back. I intend to start my own business. I began to gently promote this topic in my wife's mind – it's a shared business and I shouldn't be the only person who has to think about it.

In principle, she did not refuse, but she did not show much enthusiasm either. With a sigh, I thought that since my wife was so passive, I would take our business on my shoulders myself. Time passed, and now the same six months have passed. Alina went into business. But for some reason, after receiving all the documents, she was in no hurry to talk to me about it. I was silent for a day, two days, three days. Then I asked when we would announce the sale of the apartment and car. I also said that the shares should also be sold. “I'm not going to sell anything,” my wife said with surprise. “But how do we open a company?” – I asked my wife with wide eyes.

She decided to keep the apartment, wanting to rent it out and use the money to easily pay for tutors. And further studies too. I looked at Alina and didn't understand how she could smile. She spat all those tutors in my face. For so many years I thought we had a family, but I got such a blow. That day I couldn't stay home. I said I had something to do and left.

I invited my friends for a beer and told them what a greedy woman I had met. I thought the guys would feel sorry for me because I had to deal with a woman's betrayal, but for some reason no one took my side. They didn't even say a bad word about Alina. This means that my friends are also evil, although it is very painful to realize this.
