We sat at the table, sharing the Christmas wafer and wishing each other well-wishes.
Christmas Eve has always been a special day for us. Every year the whole family would gather at the table – parents, siblings, cousins, and even aunts, whom we only saw at Christmas. It was noisy, warm, and the air was filled with the smell of pierogi, borscht, and poppy seed cake. But this year, everything was going to change. Our family Christmas Eve turned into a nightmare that none of us would forget.
We sat at the table, sharing the Christmas wafer and exchanging wishes. Mom, as always, had tears in her eyes, Dad made a toast, and the children ran around the Christmas tree, waiting for their presents. It seemed that everything was perfect. But that was just an illusion.
During dinner, the conversation turned to memories of the past. Aunt Hela, known for her love of drinking too many glasses of wine, began telling anecdotes from her parents' youth. At first, everyone laughed, but at some point, her aunt said something that made the atmosphere thicken.
– „No, Janku– she turned to dad – „do you remember how you had to come back from abroad because that scandal came to light?”
We all froze. Mom looked at her in horror.
– „Hela, not now– she said quietly, trying to smooth things over.
But auntie couldn't hold back anymore.
– „Why not now? After all, it's been a long time. Besides, the children should know, right?”
– „What are we supposed to know?” – I asked, looking at my parents, who were avoiding our gaze.
Dad sighed heavily, as if he had been carrying this burden with him his whole life.
– „This isn't the time for that kind of talk,– he said firmly.
But it was too late. My aunt blurted it out before anyone could stop her.
– „Your dad had an affair. And not just any old affair! With that woman from Germany, right, Janku? Remember how Mother threatened to leave?”
The silence that fell was almost tangible. We all looked at Father, waiting for a denial, an explanation, something. But he just looked down.
– „Dad, is it true?” – I asked, feeling my heart start to beat faster.
Mom was close to tears. She finally answered for him.
– „Yes. That's true. But that was a long time ago. We decided to put it behind us.”
– „Leave it behind?!” – my brother, Michael, exploded. – „What about us? Why did you never tell us about this? I thought we had a happy family, and now I find out it was all a lie!”
– „It wasn't a lie– Dad said, raising his head. – „I made a mistake, but we fought for our family. We managed to get through it and… I wanted you to have a normal life.”
But normality disappeared in an instant. Michael got up from the table and left, slamming the door.
The cousins looked at each other in disbelief, and Mom began to cry. I didn't know what to say. All my life I had idealized our parents, I had believed that their love was unwavering. And now that faith had shattered.
Aunt Hela, seeing what was happening, tried to save the situation.
„Maybe I shouldn't have said it, but it was so many years ago!”
– “You shouldn't have!” – I exclaimed, feeling anger and regret mix in my head. – – It wasn't your secret to tell!”
But the damage was done.
That evening, Christmas Eve ended in an atmosphere I'll never forget. Michael didn't come back, my cousins left early, and I sat with my parents, trying to make sense of what had just happened. Mom and Dad held hands, silent. I saw pain and shame in their eyes. But I didn't know if I could forgive them.
A few months have passed since that day. Our family has never been the same. Michael still won't talk to his parents, and I'm trying to sort this all out in my head.
I know everyone makes mistakes, but this Christmas Eve reminded me how fragile our relationships are. Secrets, even the ones buried deep, have a way of coming to light. And when they do, they can destroy everything that seemed indestructible.
