Quantum computing in the hands of Europe thanks to OVH and Quellela

Monday March 18, OVH inaugurated a quantum computermade in France, developed by Quellela. In the presence of the Minister of Higher Education and Research as well as the Secretary of State for Digital Affairs, the cloud giant announces that it wants to “support the European quantum computing ecosystem”.< /p>

While Europe intends to take back the reins of its digital future, OVH “intends to fully play its role as technological leader, by investing in state-of-the-art solutions to support the strategic autonomy” of the Old Continent. In a press release, the company proudly assures that it has chosen “French Tech” by inaugurating the Quandela quantum computer: MosaiQ. Nestled in a blue metal block that stands 1.85m high, the computer uses beams of light to transport information. Its computing power of 2 qubits is even less compared to that of Intel (minimum 12 qubits), but presumably, it will soon be able to rise to the same level.

“With the inauguration of this computer, quantum computing will be more accessible and closer: our companies must use MosaiQ to accelerate their calculations and exploit its full potential. This is thanks to the innovation and audacity of suppliers clouds such as OVHcloud and startups such as Quandela that our country will be able to consolidate its place as a European leader in quantum technologies in a global ecosystem where there is increasingly intense competition.”, declared Marina Ferrari, Secretary of the State responsible for Digital.

Both companies shared their enthusiasm for this partnership.

In fact, quantum computing has a future. Thanks to the principle of quantum superposition, a computer of this ilk has computing capacities significantly greater than those of our personal computers.

To put it simply, while a classical computer processes information that areeither 0 or 1, a quantum computer will process information that can be both 0 and 1. This seems strange, but it is a story of mathematical probabilities: in the infinitely small, matter is not always defined, it may be in one state or another at the same time. The Pandora Institute devotes a particularly educational article on the subject.

Molecular modeling, finance, artificial intelligence, quantum computing promises to be revolutionary for many industrial sectors. Among them, obviously, cryptography and cybersecurity. Whether for encrypting or decrypting, these new machines (which are not intended for the general public) make current security systems almost obsolete. Edward Snowden revealed that the NSA is working on quantum computing projects, in particular to “infiltrate difficult targets”. As with any emerging tool, we can only imagine its future applications, which will depend on whoever uses it.
