Prosecutors Provide New Details of Trump's Efforts to Overturn Election Loss

Donald Trump acted outside the scope of his presidential duties when he pressured officials and then-Vice President Mike Pence to try to overturn his 2020 election defeat, prosecutors said, Voice of America reports.

"GA" recalls that the new document on this issue was filed after the Supreme Court's July decision that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution for their official actions while in office.

The court document, released on Wednesday, October 2, provides detailed information about Trump's behavior since the 2020 election, much of which has already become public thanks to news reports, the findings of the House committee investigating the Capitol riots, and the indictment filed in the case by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

Among them is the allegation that a White House official heard Trump tell family members that “it doesn't matter if you win or lose the election. You still have to fight like hell.”

Trump has pleaded not guilty to four criminal charges alleging he conspired to obstruct the certification of the election by Congress, defraud the United States of accurate election results, and interfere with Americans' exercise of their voting rights.

Much of the documents focus on Trump's relationship with Mike Pence, whom Trump tried to pressure to use his official authority to oversee the certification of the Jan. 6, 2021, congressional election results to overturn Trump's defeat.

That day, Trump gave an emotional speech before his supporters stormed the Capitol, clashed with police, sent lawmakers fleeing and chanted, “Hang Mike Pence!” The document alleges that on January 1, 2021, Trump warned Pence that people would “hate” him and “think he's a fool” if he didn't block the certification of Democratic President Joe Biden's victory.

Trump spokesman Steven Cheung condemned the document, saying, “This entire case is a biased, unconstitutional witch hunt that must be stopped in its entirety, along with every other hoax (by) Democrats.”

The document details evidence prosecutors plan to use if the case goes to trial, accusing Trump of plotting to declare victory prematurely before the election, replacing his campaign's legal team when it allegedly failed to support voter fraud allegations, and attempting to “manipulate” the election results. Pence to help him cling to power.

The filing details conversations with senior Trump administration officials, including Pence and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, who testified before the grand jury during the investigation.

Trump's lawyers have objected to Smith's release of a lengthy court document outlining his arguments, arguing that it was inappropriate just weeks before the election. They argue that the case should be dismissed based on the Supreme Court's ruling.
