Mewthree's appearance in Game Freak's Pokémon leaks

Last February, an Internet user imagined the evolutions of Mew and Mewtwo. They were succeeded by Pokémon like Mewthree, Mewfour or Mewfive, imaginary Pokémon created thanks to Midjourney. But with the leaks from Game Freak, here is the name Mewthree. And even if Mewthree has never been integrated into any game, it is not new. The first mention of a certain Mewthree dates back to the 90s. In Pokémon Pocket Monsters, a manga following the adventures of Red and his cheeky Melofy, the Normal Pokémon turned Fairy must face the Mewtwo created by Giovanni.

Of course, poor Clefairy is no match. But by observing the boss of Team Rocket, Clefairy realized that it was possible to manipulate Pokémon DNA. So, Clefairy decides to mix his DNA with that of Mewtwo, thus creating a certain Mewthree. Thanks to his new power, Clefairy gains the upper hand on Mewtwo, defeats him, and ends up regaining his normal appearance by returning to the machine. Now, more than two decades later, the Mewthree name is back. Digging into Game Freak's data, dataminers have discovered that Mewthree's references are associated with the first “Super Evolution” concept.

Looking at its design, it's easy to imagine that Game Freak refined its idea by developing not one, but two evolutions for Mewtwo. Mega evolutions introduced in Pokémon X and Y, with a Mewthree that looks like an obvious mix between Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y. Rather than offering a traditional evolution to Mewtwo, Game Freak preferred opt for a temporary evolution.

Of course, Game Freak could put an end to the speculations and provide clarifications. But the Japanese studio is not known for its talkative side. Despite everything, future analyses of data leaks could provide us with details. To be continued.
