Five people were killed and over 100 injured in a stampede during an air show in Chennai, India, The Indian Express reports.

Over 1.2 million people attended the show, which was timed to coincide with the 92nd anniversary of the country's air force. When the event ended, the entire crowd tried to leave the area at once, causing a stampede that led to the tragedy.

The publication notes that although the state government had anticipated a large crowd, the actual turnout exceeded expectations.

"What was supposed to be a spectacle of military aviation ended in chaos as the size of the crowd stunned both the organizers and local authorities. A day that was supposed to mark a moment of national pride for the Indian Air Force turned into horror on a beach in Chennai as a million-strong crowd headed for the exit," the article says.
