OpenAI releases ChatGPT-4o, a version that takes a leap in speech usage

OpenAI’s competitors will have to work twice as hard to align with the new version of ChatGPT. Presented this Monday, May 13, the new artificial intelligence model allows users to have oral conversations, as well as giving the impression of reasoning in real time. real. The Californian start-up even announces that this version will be freely accessible in a few weeks. Mira Murati, technology director of OpenAI, welcomes this progress. By focusing on “to improve the intelligence of the models”, the company would have obtained “excellent results”.  

Among the capacities soon to be available, users will first have access to text and images. However, limits will be put in place regarding the capacity of use. Subsequently, the new version of “Voice Mode”, or vocal mode, should arrive in the coming weeks for subscribers.  

In the presentation video, Mira Murati and two of her colleagues demonstrate to users the interest they will have in using this vocal mode, which reproduces human discussions with great fidelity.  

Moreover, this mode would even be able to read the emotions of users on their faces, thanks to the camera of the smartphone used. Users could even interrupt ChatGPT's speech to bounce back to another subject. This with a fluid adaptation on the part of the conversational agent. It would even be capable of sarcasm. The range of possibilities does not stop there. Indeed, the GPT-4o model would also be able to translate in real time into different languages.  

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, hopes for an AI that will one day be “general”, and be endowed with human cognitive abilities and capable of making scientific breakthroughs in the service of humanity. Enough to demonstrate that he does not intend to stop there.  

Originally founded as a non-profit research lab with backing from Elon Musk, OpenAI is now valued at $80 billion according to the New York Times. Since December 2023, its annual revenues are estimated at $2 billion according to Financial Times.  

However, Mira Murati emphasizes that “a very important part of our mission is to make all of our advanced AI tools available to the public for free”.  

 “We think it's very important that people understand intuitively what the technology can do”, added the technology director from OpenAI.
