Norway and Germany to develop new torpedo for submarines

Norway and Germany to develop new 533-mm torpedo for Type 212 CD submarines

This is reported by the Hartpunkt publication.

As part of a joint project, both countries plan to create an improved version of the heavy 533-mm torpedo, which will replace the DM2A4 torpedoes currently in service with both fleets.

Program The torpedo was developed under the name Common Heavy Weight Torpedo (CHWT). It is expected that this torpedo will become the main anti-submarine and anti-ship weapon for the future Type 212 CD submarines.

«Further development is taking place within the framework of German-Norwegian cooperation on equipping future Type 212 CD submarines», – a spokesman for the German Ministry of Defense noted.

The exact cost, technical specifications and year of adoption of the new torpedoes have not yet been disclosed. However, given the plans to adopt the first Type 212 CD submarines into the Royal Norwegian Navy in 2029, the likely date for the introduction of the new torpedoes into service could be 2030.

It should be noted that the CHWT torpedoes will replace the 533 mm DM2A4 torpedoes developed by the German company Atlas Elektronik in the German and Norwegian fleets.

Although it has not been officially announced which company will participate in the creation of the torpedo from the Norwegian side, it is highly likely that it will be the Kongsberg Group, which already has significant experience in the development and production of torpedoes.

It should be noted that currently two submarines of the new Type 212CD project are under construction in Germany, and The total order book is four boats for Norway and two for Germany.

In addition, due to the worsening geopolitical situation, the countries are likely to place additional orders. The parties are currently discussing the possibility of increasing the total order to six boats for Norway and six to nine boats for Germany.
