A three-year agreement has been signed between Local 212 of the International Alliance of Stage, Theater and Motion Picture Employees (IATSE) and the American giant of streaming, Netflix. A first in Canada.
We're really excited about the new deal with Netflix, says Damian Petti, president of IATSE Local 212, which represents more than 1,600 entertainment workers in southern Alberta.
It's a generous contract, maintains Damian Petti. The achievements of the agreement concern in particular compensation for worker travel, protections against long working days as well as penalties if meal breaks are not respected.

According to him, this agreement is the direction the film industry must take. He hopes that this contract will open the door to other agreements of the same type.

In this regard, the government tabled a bill on Tuesday which proposes modifications to the tax credit program for film and television production in the province. The goal is to give more flexibility to Alberta-based productions, which would attract more big-budget production, according to Tanya Fir.
The bill also provides additional incentives for companies whose three-quarters of film production will be done in rural or remote areas. We want to encourage film crews and big-budget studios to come throughout the province, notes the minister.
The agreement signed between Netflix and the union will give the American giant more stability to invest more in Alberta, according to Damian Petti. They will be able to prepare budgets for the next three years, there will be no surprises for them.
This sends a strong signal and suggests that Netflix is looking to bring more productions to Alberta.
