Netflix reveals first image from Magic: The Gathering animated series

During Geeked Week 2024, which was held this week, Netflix made a whole bunch of announcements regarding upcoming films and series coming to the platform, including news of a highly anticipated project that we hadn't heard about for many years, know the animated series Magic: The Gathering.

First look at the Magic: The Gathering animated series

Thanks to Geeked Week, Netflix subscribers were able to get a glimpse of what's coming soon on the streaming platform. The company with the red N gave news of some highly anticipated titles, such as the first glimpse of Toph in season 2 of the live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender, or the sequel to the live-action One Piece, having revealed a first image of Chopper as well as the names of the actors of Nico Robin and Crocodile.

But the streaming giant also took the opportunity to return to another project that we had not heard from for ages. Indeed, since the announcement of the animated series Magic: The Gatheringin June 2019, more than five years ago now, details on the subject have been scarce, if not non-existent. And after a long silence, the platform has finally shed light on this series awaited by many, by revealing a first image that gives a little hope to fans of the franchise.

At the moment, we don't have much information about the project. We know that it is an animated series based on the universe of the famous card game Magic: The Gathering and that it is currently in production with a new creative team in charge of the project.

It includes Terry Matalas as showrunner, known for the series 12 Monkeys and for seasons 2 and 3 of Star Trek: Picard. The series will be directed by Patrick Osborne, who is notably responsible for the animated short film The Feast.

Good news for those who thought the project had been abandoned, especially since Brandon Routh, who apparently lent his voice to the character of Gideon Jura, had recently suggested to Collider that the animated series was no longer going to see the light of day and that it was “ancient history.”

And to learn more about upcoming Netflix projects, find out what surprise Tim Burton has in store for Jenna Ortega fans in season 2 of Wednesday.
