Émélie Mazerolle had the scare of her life this week when her windshield was smashed by a block of ice that had broken off the roof of a van traveling in the opposite direction.

The incident occurred Tuesday noon while Émélie Mazerolle was driving on Highway 13, on the Inkerman plain.

The 22-year-old young woman was traveling in the direction of Shippagan when she encountered a van coming in the opposite direction.

I just saw the truck and, with the wind, the ice [breaks away] from its roof. I had time to close my eyes and I just heard the window break, says the young woman.

I have not yet found the vision in my eye. There was blood in the pupil and it no longer reacts to light: it will remain large for the rest of my life. I don’t know if there will be any changes, I’m waiting to see a specialist, says Émélie Mazerolle.

Émélie Mazerolle was injured in the left eye during 'a road accident this week.

Still shaken by this accident, the young woman today wants to make motorists understand that it is important to clear snow from their vehicles.

It could be fatal: I could have lost my life, I can't believe it, says the young woman, who says she still has trouble sleeping since her accident. We don't think about it, but it really happens. I was really lucky.
