Moscow is undergoing a large-scale purge of corrupt generals, says British intelligence

Repressions against generals accused of corruption have begun in Moscow. In addition to the Ministry of Defense, this also affected other security agencies.

This was reported by the UK Ministry of Defense on the X social network.

According to the report, on October 7, 2024, Russian media reported on the presentation of new charges against former Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov, who was already charged in April 2024.

The first case concerns the theft of 200 million rubles (about $2 million) during the purchase of ferries for crossing the Kerch Strait, which were damaged during the war. The second is the theft of 3 billion rubles (about $200 million) from the Interkommerts bank during the purchase of foreign currency.

British intelligence notes that charges continue to accumulate against former high-ranking Russian military officials. This is part of a large-scale persecution of high-ranking officials below the government or executive level. Russian media also reported that eight generals were dismissed from such structures as the Investigative Committee, the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Federal Penitentiary Service. Independent Russian publications believe that this is connected with corruption scandals.

– If this information is confirmed, it may indicate the expansion of anti-corruption repressions beyond the defense sector,– the UK Ministry of Defense notes.

BAGNET recalls that after the start of his fifth presidential term, Vladimir Putin made changes in the government, in particular, he dismissed Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, appointing him Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, and Andrei Belousov became Defense Minister.
