Marvel: Hawkeye Officially Becomes a Non-Binary Superhero

After Loki, it's now the turn of another Marvel hero to officially become non-binary. The costume of Hawkeye, one of the six original Avengers, will be worn by a character who identifies neither as a woman nor as a man. We tell you more about Charli Ramsey below.

Who is Charli Ramsey, the new Hawkeye?

Before we continue, a quick reminder about non-binary. This is a gender identity, not a sexual orientation. It concerns people who do not consider themselves strictly female or strictly male, designating all possibilities outside of a strictly female or male identity. This is how Charli Ramsey, a new character in the Marvel stable, is characterized. Appearing in the comic book Ultimates (Vol. 4) #5 which has just been published in the United States, this Native American imagined by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri identifies as two-spirited. This is the first non-binary character to take on the role of a historical hero of the House of Ideas: the new Hawkeye is them!

According to her creator, Deniz Camp, Charli identifies as two-spirit and uses the pronouns “they” and “they.”But what does two-spirit mean? The term was coined by the LGBTQ+ community at the third annual First Nations Gay and Lesbian Intertribal Conference of the United States and Canada, held in Winnipeg in 1990. It allows an Indigenous person to identify as LGBTQ+ in a Western context. In fact, some Indigenous nations in North America consider that there are at least four genders: masculine men, feminine women, men with feminine tendencies, women with masculine tendencies. A plurality of gender expression that we should find in Charli Ramsey! In 2019, Marvel promised more diversity and inclusion in the future, not only on screen, but also in the pages of its comics. A goal fulfilled by the firm!

And you, what do you think of this new non-binary character?
