Marvel: Doctor Doom to rule the Multiverse next year

Robert Downey Jr. will be Doctor Doom for Marvel. Surprise, the American actor returns from the dead, or almost, after Avengers: Endgame. He will lend his features to the one who we guess as the next antagonist of the MCU, a return that has not been unanimous. But Marvel prefers to pull out all the stops by announcing a mega-event for next year.

When the MCU relies on Robert Downey Jr and his Doctor Doom

After the iconic Thanos, Marvel will continue to play with the charisma of Robert Downey Jr to put Doctor Doom in everyone's hearts. But before discovering him on screen, probably in Avengers: Doomsday, we will have to be patient. And for good reason, this Avengers 5 is not scheduled before May 2026. And yes… That's a long time away. To keep us waiting, the MCU will offer no less than 4 films. Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Blade, films that are sure to introduce a whole bunch of new heroes, just in time for a new Avengers film.

But after Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, two films held in high esteem by Marvel fans, the House of Ideas is expected to hit hard, even more so since the MCU is losing momentum, with films whose scope is diminished and impact limited. The MCU is tiring, even if productions like Deadpool & Wolverine prove that the appetite of filmmakers for superhero films is not dead and buried.

A new series on Doctor Doom

As an appetizer, Marvel has just announced that a Marvel event, planned for 2025, will see the current Sorcerer Supreme become Emperor Doom. It was at NYCC that Marvel lifted the veil on the rest of the events. On the comics side, Blood Huntsaw Doctor Doom become the Sorcerer Supreme after eclipsing Doctor Strange, then disappearing without warning. With One World Under Doom, Marvel plans to shake up its universe like it hasn't done since Dark Reign.

To satisfy the voracious appetite of its fans, Marvel will offer them Rise of Emperor Doom, a five-issue mini-series by Ryan North and R.B. Silva. Great people at the helm, for a first issue expected on February 12, 2025. The cover is to be discovered just below, followed by its synopsis.

Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme, then disappeared beyond the closed borders of Latveria. For most, there is enough going on in the world that Doom's absence is not a priority, and a little time without him feels like a blessing. Only a few recognize this moment for what it truly is… the calm before the storm. A storm that has now arrived. The world has awakened to a new reality: Doctor Doom, Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, has taken over magically from all the media on the planet and declared himself Emperor of the World – the ruler of a new United Latveria! And shockingly, impossibly, all of Earth's leaders seem to agree with this decision. Fortunately, whether it's mind control or Doombots, whatever's ailing them hasn't affected Earth's heroes. So they quickly form a strike team to put an end to Doom's machinations. But will they succeed? And what will happen when some begin to welcome their new emperor with open arms, demanding a single world under Doom's rule? The biggest and most shocking event in Marvel history begins here, with THE RISE OF EMPEROR DOOM #1.

The question is, what will Marvel have in store for us to follow this event? Crossovers with major consequences? Series adaptations? An omnipresence of Doom both on screen and in comics? We'll find out in the coming weeks.
