Man sold non-existent cars – what the court decided

In Chernihiv region a man organized a “business” selling non-existent cars. The fraudster was brought to criminal responsibility.

This is stated in the verdict, which the Pryluky City District Court of Chernihiv region adopted on Thursday, December 12.

Case details

According to court materials, from April to August 2022, the accused published advertisements on the Telegram channel about the sale of cars from abroad. He received almost half a million hryvnias from nine buyers for vehicles that he was supposed to deliver to Ukraine, but after receiving the money, he stopped contacting the clients.

Court decision

During the court hearing, the defendant pleaded guilty. The man said that he communicated with potential buyers in the Telegram group “Prygon” and provided them with card numbers for sending money, but he never drove the cars. The defendant was found guilty of fraud (part two of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), sentenced to 2.6 years in prison, but this sentence was replaced with one year of probation. The man was also ordered to compensate the victims for 475 thousand hryvnias of material damage.

Currently, the court's decision has not yet entered into force. Within 30 days from the date of announcement, the verdict can be appealed.
