Lord of the Rings: Sauron's 8 Most Important Allies

Arguably one of the most iconic villains in all of fiction, Sauron is the Dark Lord of Dark Lords – although when you're familiar with J.R.R. Tolkien's universe, you'll of course realize that Melkor is the true Dark Lord and the greatest antagonist in that universe. In The Lord of the Rings, Sauron seeks to enslave all of the free peoples of Middle-earth, but he's far from alone in achieving his goals, and here are the eight most important characters who helped him: in his rise or who are even his allies.

< h2>#8 Arachne

Daughter of the legendary Ungoliant, the giant spider Arachne is a terrifying creature that gave our heroes Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee a hard time in their quest to destroy the One Ring. Indeed, it was by capturing Frodo to feed herself that Arachne found herself in spite of herself helping the Dark Lord and could well have killed our Hobbits, which would have allowed Sauron's victory.

#7 Celebrimbor

The great elf blacksmith Celebrimbor is the lord of the city Ost-in-Edhil, which is none other than the capital of the elven kingdom of Eregion in the Second Age of Middle-earth.After founding the Guild of Blacksmiths and befriending the dwarf Narvi, the elven lord welcomes Annatar the Lord of Gifts who claims to be sent by the Vala, master of the earth and the forge Aulë. With the latter's teachings, the Elves create rings that Annatar corrupts before revealing himself to be Sauron and leaving to settle in Mordor. Celebrimbor then forges the three elven rings which will be the only ones not to be corrupted by Evil. It was therefore under the influence of Sauron that Celebrimbor helped the cause of the Dark Lord before being captured and killed by the latter.

#6 Ar-Pharazóñ

After having made a forced marriage with the rightful queen of Némenor Tar-Mériel, Ar-Pharazôn takes power over the island and after having defeated Sauron during an expedition to Middle-earth, he brings the latter back as a prisoner. In just three years, the lord of Númenor becomes corrupted and over the years that follow becomes a true tyrant, who ends up deciding to attack Valinor in order to gain immortality. Eru Ilúvatar, the God of the universe of J.R.R. Tolkien, unable to let this happen, makes Ar-Pharazón's fleet and the island of Númenor disappear under the waves, which marks the end of this human people and a great victory for Sauron. Although not exactly an ally of the Dark Lord, Ar-Pharazón aids Sauron in his quest to destroy Nemenor.

#5 Saruman

The head of the White Council and master of Orthanc basically serves the interests of the free peoples of Middle-earth, but jealous of Gandalf to whom Círdan gave the ring of fire Narya, Saruman decides to make an alliance with Sauron to find the One Ring, with the firm intention of doubling the latter and using it for personal ends. With the industrialization of Isengard and the creation of an army of Orcs, Saruman wanting to serve his personal interests finds himself helping Sauron and unfortunately for him, this is what will lead to his downfall without the Dark Lord coming to him the rescue.

#4 Gothmog

This Orc lieutenant of the Witch-King of Angmar is only slightly present in the literary work of J.R.R. Tolkien, but has a much more important role in Peter Jackson's adaptations. Indeed, if Gothmog is only mentioned in the novel The Return of the King during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, in the film we see him commanding the assault on Osgiliath and then taking the lead of the orc legions during the aforementioned battle. This servant of Sauron still manages to take the citadel of Osgiliath and lead the forces of the Dark Lord alongside the Witch-King of Angmar.

#3 Mouth of Sauron

This main lieutenant of Sauron is originally a man who fled the island of Númenor before it ended up under water and who was taken in by the Dark Lord in Mordor. Sauron teaches him sorcery and the mouth of Sauron whose real name is not known at all becomes the lieutenant of Barad-dúr. If in the film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, its role is limited to provoking Aragorn before being killed by the latter, the role of Sauron's mouth in the literary work is much more substantial. We learn that before the dwarf king of the Lonely Mountain Dain II Steelfoot sent Gimli and his father Glein to Foncombe, Barad-dûr's lieutenant came to visit him to make him an offer as Sauron's messenger that the Lord of the Dwarves refused.

#2 Khamûl

Second of the Ringwraiths and also in the ranking, Khamûl é was in the Second Age a lord of Men in the lands of Rhûn, before Sauron offered him one of the nine rings and he sank into darkness. In the Third Age, this Nazgûl recaptures Dol Guldur on the outskirts of Mirkwood on behalf of the Dark Lord and becomes his lieutenant. Subsequently, he actively participates in the search for the One Ring in The Shire and in the pursuit of the Hobbits. Finally, Khamûl becomes leader of the Ringwraiths after the death of the Witch-king of Angmar.

#1 The Witch-king of Angmar

Lord of Minas Morgul, this former king of Men, probably from Nemenor, was one of the first to join Sauron to become his most faithful ally. With abilities in sorcery and resistance to sun and water far superior to Among his fellow Ringwraiths, the Witch-king of Angmar is by far the most powerful. After conquering the lands northwest of the Misty Mountains, the Lord of the Nazgúl founded the kingdom of Angmar there and thus became the famous Witch-king of Angmar. During the events of The Lord of the Rings, the Witch-king stabs Frodo in the Windy Mountains and then pursues him and his kin to the Ford of Bruinen where Elrond makes them disappear beneath the waves. The nine Nazgül are then granted winged steeds by Sauron – a sort of immense flying reptile – and it is during the capture of Osgiliath that we discover for the first time these creatures ridden by the Ringwraiths. Finally, the Witch-king of Angmar leads the armies of the Dark Lord during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields and undermines the defenses of Minas Tirith before the Rohirrim land. Fighting ensues and after having killed King Théoden, it is Éowyn, the latter's niece, and Merry who finally manage to defeat and end the days of the legendary Witch-King of Angmar.

Tell us in the comments who is your favorite servant of evil and don't miss out on discovering the poster for the next film The War of the Rohirrim.
