Lithuanian intelligence services have not yet confirmed sabotage in the damage to cables in the Baltic Sea

The Director of the State Security Department (DDB) of Lithuania, Darius Jauniškis, stated that there is currently no evidence that underwater telecommunication and electrical cables in the Baltic Sea have been damaged intentionally in recent months.

His statement is quoted by Delfi, reports “European Pravda”.

According to the head of the Lithuanian special services, the role of the agency – “to observe, to receive all possible information and to inform so that we can be better prepared”,– he stressed.

“So far there is no evidence that this (activity. – Ed.) is intentional. For now”, – Jauniškis said.

However, the intelligence chief stressed that the situation in the region remains tense.

“The situation remains heated and will probably escalate. It would be simply naive to cherish the illusion that our restless neighbors will calm down”, – Jauniškis emphasized.

According to him, the DDB should present a report on the threats as early as early March.

Estonia had previously suggested that shipping companies would have to pay for using the Baltic Sea to cover the high costs of protecting submarine cables.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Paluckas, in turn, stated that the European Union could financially support countries affected by potential acts of sabotage amid a series of incidents involving damage to cables in the Baltic Sea.
