Lithuania wants EU financial support for countries affected by cable incidents

After another cable damage in the Baltic Sea on Sunday, Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas stressed that the European Union could financially support countries affected by such potential acts of sabotage.

This was reported by LRT, as “European Pravda” writes.

He noted that each such incident causes significant damage to countries, which someone must compensate.

“Each of these incidents costs very serious money, and we should talk about financial support for the state or states that are subjected to such provocations or acts of sabotage,” – Paluckas told reporters on Monday after meeting with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda.

“Of course, it is not easy financially for one country (the Baltic Sea countries. – Ed.) to be subjected to constant attacks,” – emphasized the head of the Lithuanian government.

He assured that he has no doubt that EU leaders will discuss this issue in the near future at the European Council.

As is known, the Swedish prosecutor's office announced on Sunday evening, January 26, the launch of an investigation into possible sabotage after the damage to the underwater fiber-optic cable connecting Latvia with the Swedish island of Gotland.

This occurred after a series of incidents with damage to underwater infrastructure in the Baltic and the threats posed by the “shadow fleet” of tankers transporting Russian oil.
