Since the beginning of summer, after the increase in electricity tariffs, the cost of charging electric cars in Ukraine has risen significantly. Radio Maximum tells how much it costs to charge a Volkswagen ID.4 now.

The calculation of the cost of charging electric cars according to the new tariff was published by Focus publication. After all, since June 1, 2024, the electricity tariff has increased to 4.32 hryvnias per 1 kWh.

The Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover in the 204-horsepower version has a battery with a useful capacity of 77 kWh. Until June 1, its full charge cost 203.28 hryvnias at the usual tariff of 2.64 hryvnias per 1 kWh and 101.64 hryvnias at the night tariff in UAH 1.32 (from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. if a two-zone meter is available).

The new tariffs for electricity are UAH 4.32 per 1 kWh standard and UAH 2.16 per kWh at night with a two-zone meter. Charging the Volkswagen ID.4 now costs 332.64 and 166.32 UAH, respectively.

If we take into account the passport range of VW ID.4 in 520 km, then 100 km of mileage under the old tariff cost 39 hryvnias, and under the night tariff – 19.5 hryvnias. Considering that a liter of A-95 gasoline now costs 56 hryvnias on average, this is equivalent to a consumption of 0.7 and 0.35 l/100 km, respectively.

The new electricity tariffs from June 1, 2024 increased the cost of 100 km of mileage to 64 hryvnias at the standard tariff and 32 hryvnias at night. That's how much it would cost to refuel a car that consumes 1.1 and 0.65 l/100 km, respectively.

The cost of charging an electric car at fast charging stations:

Tariffs at fast charging stations are much higher – 13-16 hryvnias for 1 kWh. Accordingly, 100 km of mileage on a Nissan Leaf or Volkswagen ID.4 will cost 192.5-237 hryvnias, which corresponds to gasoline consumption of 3.4-4.2 l/100 km or diesel consumption of 3.6-4.5 l/100 km (at a price of UAH 52.69 per liter).

Let's count together: how much worth charging the Volkswagen ID.4 at the new tariff

Therefore, a significant benefit for electric car owners when charging at home still remains, even if we take into account that the actual range is usually less than passport.

At the same time, when using fast charging stations, the savings compared to cars with internal combustion engines are not so great. Therefore, fast charging stations are usually used by owners of electric cars on a long trip or in the extreme case when the battery is discharged.
