Kazakhstan Decides Not to Join BRICS

Kazakhstan will refrain from applying for BRICS membership, although the country's president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has received such offers.

This was stated by the press secretary of the president of Kazakhstan, Berik Uali, to the publication Tengrinews.kz.

The speaker of the president of Kazakhstan said that the country will refrain from applying for BRICS in the “foreseeable future”, in particular due to the length of the consideration of the issue of accession, as well as other issues “related to the prospects for the development of this association”.

According to him, Tokayev received offers to join BRICS. However, as of now, the President of Kazakhstan, taking into account national interests, prefers the UN “as a universal and uncontested organization in which all current international problems can and should be discussed”.

However, he added that Tokayev will take part in the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia next week.

BAGNET recalls that the BRICS Association was formed in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. In 2024, the organization expanded to include the UAE, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia.

In 2024, Malaysia and Azerbaijan submitted formal applications to join BRICS. In September, Bloomberg reported that Turkey had submitted a formal application to join BRICS.
