Joker Folie À Deux: the DC film breaks this catastrophic record

In 2019, DC Comics scored a huge hit with the feature film Joker. In addition to winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival – one of the most prestigious awards in the world of cinema– and two Oscars, including one awarded to Joaquin Phoenix, the film exceeded a billion dollars at the global box office, for a budget estimated at barely 60 million. It also became the most lucrative R-rated film in history, before being surpassed this summer by Deadpool & Wolverine from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.Buoyed by the film's success despite some controversy over its relationship to violence, Warner Bros. Discovery decided to produce a sequel, still written and directed by Todd Phillips.

Released on October 2, 2024 in France and two days later in the United States, Joker: Folie À Deux was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated films of the year. However, the film had a catastrophic start… In addition to having collected barely 20 million dollars on its first day of operation on American soil – less than the catastrophic The Flash and The Marvels -, the sequel to Joker should collect between 35 and 42 million dollars at the box office at the end of its first weekend. That is three times less than the first Joker… Let's not forget that the budget of Joker: Folie à Deux is estimated at 200 million dollars!

We also learned that the CinemaScore company, which measures the appeal of films to spectators during their first night of operation to give them a grade between A and F, has just given Joker: Folie à Deux a grade of D. That is the worst grade ever given to a film adapted from a comic book… Until today, it was the terrible film The Fantastic Four (2015) which held this sad record, with a grade of C-. À for comparison, Morbius (2022) and Madame Web (2024) obtained a C+ grade. 

Of course, the CinemaScore is in no way representative of the quality of a film, but is an indicator taken very seriously by Hollywood studios. Joker: Folie à Deux has however found some support, notably from the legendary Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Dracula). The Pope of New Hollywood thus congratulated Todd Phillips: “Since the wonderful Very Bad Trip, he is always one step ahead of the public and never does what they expect of him. Congratulations for Joker: Folie à Deux!” As a reminder, Coppola's latest film, Megalopolis, also received a D rating from CinemaScore…
