Joe Biden calls on social media to be held accountable for misinformation

US President Joe Biden delivered a farewell address to the nation on the night of Thursday, January 16, Kyiv time (in America it is still the 15th, Wednesday). During his speech, he called social media platforms to account, expressing concern about misinformation.

What Biden said about the threat of social media

“I am equally concerned about the potential growth of a technological industrial complex that could pose a real danger to our country,” — Biden said.

He stressed that Americans, due to their use of social media and the platforms' own refusal to fact-check, are being exposed to an avalanche of misinformation and falsehoods. This, in turn, allows for the abuse of power.

“The free press is collapsing, editors are disappearing. Social media is refusing to fact-check. The truth is being obscured by lies told for power and profit. We must hold social platforms accountable to protect our children, our families, and our democracy itself from the abuse of power,” he urged.
