iPhone becomes a less profitable investment every year, study

Two weeks after the release of the iPhone 16 series smartphone in “like new” condition in the US secondary market can be sold for an average of 41.2% cheaper than their original price. This is the fastest depreciation on record for an iPhone.

According to the study, the iPhone 16 depreciates 8% faster than the iPhone 15 of its time in the first two weeks of sales. Moreover, this trend is observed not only in standard models, but also in the entire line. This is stated in the SellCell report.

At the same time, Samsung devices show the opposite picture. Over the year, the Galaxy S23 lost 61% of its price, better than the Galaxy S22, which lost 66% in value over the same period. The new Galaxy S24 shows an even slower decline in value, according to data for the first six months.

SellCell analysts note that iPhones have long been considered the best investment among mobile devices, as they could be profitably sold after some time. However, starting with the iPhone 12, each new generation loses value faster than the last. This can significantly influence consumer decisions when choosing a new smartphone.

Apple vs. Samsung/sellcell

Another study showed that the iPhone 16 is the least popular smartphone of Apple in the last 5 years. As a result, the company had to reduce orders for new iPhones to avoid losses.

The report also says that the Samsung Galaxy S23 lost 61, 1% of its price in 12 months, a marked improvement over the previous model's loss of 66.7% over the same time. The current Galaxy S24 shows a slower decline in value. If the current trend continues, in the coming years, Samsung and Apple devices may be on the same level in terms of benefits when buying.
