In Transcarpathia, the foreman of the customs post was convicted for smuggling iPhone smartphones

The Uzhhorod City District Court found the chief inspector of the Transcarpathian Customs, a member of the Chopka City Council, Yury Korol, guilty of abuse of influence. The official was fined UAH 34,000 for helping to import the iPhone 15 into Ukraine without declaring it for a bribe.

According to the court verdict handed down on September 16, in August 2023, the head of the Pavlovo customs post Yurii Korol decided to get rich illegally by facilitating the unimpeded importation of iPhone 15 mobile phones into Ukraine.

Having met a businessman who was engaged in the export of Ukrainian truffles, the accused agreed for a bribe to help him import a shipment of iPhones to Transcarpathia without customs clearance. Yuriy Korol involved his deputy in the scheme, who was preparing to be transferred to a similar position at the “Vylok” checkpoint. It was through this checkpoint that phones were to be imported.

Yuriy Korol agreed with the entrepreneur on a monthly reward depending on the number of imported iPhones. On December 16, 2023, the customs officer was detained on suspicion of bribery.

During the court session, Yuriy Korol entered into a plea agreement with the prosecutor. As a result, judge Maryna Khamnyk found the official guilty of abuse of influence and fined him UAH 34,000. The convict must also pay UAH 37,800 for forensic examinations.

It should be added that Yuriy Korol has been working at the Transcarpathian Customs since 1988. Since 2014, he headed the Pavlovo customs post. on the Ukrainian-Slovak border. During the hearing of the case in court, Yury Korol was transferred to the position of chief state inspector of the customs risk management department of the Transcarpathian Customs. In 2020, Yuriy Korol was elected a deputy of the Chopka City Council from the “For the Future” party.
