U.S. wants to legislate to allow workers to ignore work calls during off-hours

California lawmakers want to straighten out labor policies that have become confusing since the pandemic. Their initiative is aimed at prohibiting managers from disturbing their employees outside of working hours, unless it is an emergency situation. The problem we have now — it is a gray area where the employee is expected to respond all the time when on paper he works from 9 to 5», — says Assembly Member for Labor and Employment Matt Haney. This is reported by Business Insider.

Bill 2751, filed in February, would apply to both public and private employers, requiring them to provide employees with the “right to disconnect'' ;  in non-working hours. It makes some exceptions for emergencies or schedule changes.

«This doesn mean that people cannot work long hours or be contracted when they work on-call, but it  ;must be clearly spelled out», — said Haney, who represents the San Francisco area.

The bill is now in the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee, where it has already been read twice and amended.
