Hungary offers Ukrainians not to study the state language

To unblock Kyiv’s path to joining the European Union, neighboring Hungary has put forward a list of 11 demands to Ukraine, said Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Olga Stefanishina.

She added that the issues raised are aimed at strengthening the protection of the rights of national minorities in Ukraine. What are these points — was not disclosed.

Stefanishina assured that Ukraine is ready to strengthen the protection of the rights of national minorities and implement steps “agreed upon within the framework of dialogue and on the basis of relevant agreements with Hungary, in good faith and as a contribution to mutual understanding, trust and respect.” .

The EP claims that it has reviewed documents from its European colleagues regarding the Hungarian ultimatum. Thus, half of the 11 points are “educational block”. Most of the points are “acceptable,” journalists note. However, among them are the following:

• Recognition of schools with even one Hungarian class as Hungarian schools;
• Abolition of the norm on what percentage of Hungarians must live in a certain territory for recognition of it as Hungarian.
• Amendments to the electoral legislation to ensure the representation of Hungarians in the Verkhovna Rada.
• Removal of the requirement for government officials to know the state language, allowing them to use Hungarian.
