Hundreds of participants in the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca have died due to debilitating heat waves, media and foreign ministries reported.
AFP news agency reported on Tuesday, June 18, citing diplomats, that at least 550 people died during the Hajj.
Of these, 323 were Egyptian citizens. Most of them died from heat-related illnesses, AFP reported, citing two Arab diplomats.
Reuters could not independently confirm these figures.
Crushes, fires in tent camps and other accidents have caused deaths during the Hajj in Saudi Arabia over the past 30 years.
The pilgrimage began on Friday, June 14.
