How to preserve food when there is no electricity for a long time and the refrigerator does not work

Russia has caused enormous damage to Ukrainian energy. The consequences of this are blackouts, which can be long. And this can affect a number of areas of our lives.

One of the problems in such situations is the preservation of products, especially those that require refrigeration. How to preserve products when there is no light for a long time and the refrigerator does not work? Here are some useful tips from Radio MAXIMUM, that will help you avoid food spoilage.

1. Use insulating materials

Insulating materials such as blankets, old towels or even newspapers can help keep the fridge colder for longer. Wrap the refrigerator or freezer to reduce heat exchange with the environment.

2. Use refrigerants

If you know of a possible power outage in advance, prepare ice packs or special gel refrigerants. Place them in the fridge and freezer to keep them at a lower temperature for as long as possible.

3. Store food in insulated containers

Thermal containers or coolers are a great way to keep food cold. Put ice or refrigerants inside and store food in containers with tightly closed lids. This will help keep you cool even when there is no electricity.

4. Place products strategically

Put the most heat-sensitive foods, such as meat, fish, dairy products, in the coldest parts of the refrigerator or freezer. These are usually the lower shelves or the back. Those products that can withstand a slightly warmer temperature should be placed closer to the door.

5. Reduce the number of refrigerator openings

Every time you open the refrigerator or freezer door, cold air is released and warm air is admitted. Try to open the refrigerator as rarely as possible and only when necessary to maintain the temperature inside.

6. Prepare food in advance

If you know of planned power outages, prepare food in advance and store it in thermal containers. Ready-made food can be stored longer and be less sensitive to temperature fluctuations.

7. Preserve and dry products

Canning and drying foods are traditional methods that help preserve food without refrigeration. Canned vegetables, fruits, meat and fish can be stored for a long time without refrigeration, as can dried foods.

8. Use alternative energy sources

If power outages are frequent in your area, consider using alternative energy sources such as portable generators or solar panels. They can provide power for the refrigerator during outages.

Preserving food during a power outage is a challenge, but with the right approach it can be successfully overcome. Use insulating materials, refrigerants, thermal containers, and strategically place products. Take care of your supplies, prepare meals in advance, can and dry foods, and consider alternative energy sources. Thus, you will be able to keep your products fresh and safe even during long-term power outages.
