How the iPhone smartphone dimensions will change in 2025: everything we know so far

This year, Apple slightly changed the display sizes of the iPhone 16 Pro, making them larger than the 2023 iPhone 15 Pro models. Next year, the screen sizes in the iPhone 17 line will also change.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine (Styler project) with a link to the MacRumors website, which specializes in news, rumors and information related to Apple products.

Standard iPhone 17

Apple may introduce a new screen size for the standard iPhone 17 model in 2025. The screen of the iPhone 17 could be 6.3 inches, which is larger than the current 6.1 inches, which would make it the same size as the current iPhone 16 Pro. With a diagonal of 6.3 inches, it will be between the sizes of the iPhone 15 (6.1 inches) and the iPhone 15 Plus (6.7 inches). lang=”RU-RU” paraeid=”{430646f5-2aa0-4f9f-bb62-501d0cf9130d}{169}” paraid=”2126397466″ >iPhone 17 Air

Rumor has it that Apple plans to phase out the Plus model in 2025 due to weak sales and replace it with a slimmer iPhone 17, which could be called the iPhone Air”.

While The iPhone 16 Plus has a 6.7-inch screen, the iPhone 17 Air will most likely be between the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max in size. Various rumors call the screen sizes  6.55 inches6.6 inches and 6.65 inches, making it smaller than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but larger than iPhone 17 Pro.

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max

Apple is not expected to change the sizes of the Pro models next year, as it has already made changes to the iPhone 16 series this year. This means that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will have sizes of approximately 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches respectively.

However, according to data from The Information, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will receive “significant changes in design”, which will concern not only the screen size. The changes are said to include the use of aluminum for the frame instead of titanium, a back panel made of aluminum and glass, as well as a rectangular camera protrusion.

New display technology

120Hz ProMotion for all models

Apple plans to expand ProMotion technology to the entire iPhone lineup in 2025, allowing all models to use the screen refresh rate up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and video playback when needed. Previously only the “Pro” models had this feature.

Notably, ProMotion will also allow the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 “Air” display to lower the refresh rate to more power-efficient values, such as 1Hz, enabling an always-on display feature. This screen will display the clock, widgets, notifications, and lock screen wallpaper even when the device is locked.

More energy-efficient screens

According to unofficial data, the iPhone 17 Pro could get a new display technology called Low-Dielectric TEE (Transmission Electrically Enhanced). This term likely refers to the use of low-dielectric materials in the display's thin-film packaging.

While it's not yet clear what exactly this innovation does, the use of materials with low dielectric constants usually helps reduce signal interference and energy loss, leading to more efficient energy use and possibly longer battery life.

Anti-glare display with protection against scratches

The iPhone 17 is rumored to feature an anti-glare display that will be more scratch-resistant than the Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 15 models. The iPhone 17's outer glass is expected to have an “ultra-hard anti-glare layer” that will be more scratch-resistant. It's unclear whether Apple plans to use Gorilla Glass Armor, like Samsung does on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but Corning's description of the latest technology fits with that rumor. However, it is worth remembering that the new iPhone 16 Pro models are already equipped with the latest generation Ceramic Shield, which, according to Apple, is twice as strong as the glass of any other smartphone.

Smaller Dynamic Island

The iPhone 17 Pro Max will have a significantly narrower Dynamic Island thanks to the use of a smaller “metal lens” in the Face ID system, according to Haitong's Jeff Pu.

Unlike traditional iPhone cameras that use curved lenses to direct light onto the image sensor, metal lenses are thin and flat lenses with microscopic patterns that allow light to be focused more precisely.

If this results in the reduction of Dynamic Island, it would be the first time Apple has changed this element since its appearance in the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022.

iPhone models in the past: significant changes in size

From the original iPhone to the iPhone 4S (2007-2011)

The first iPhone released in 2007, had a screen size of 3.5 inches, which was considered quite large for the time compared to many modern phones. This screen size was maintained until the iPhone 4S model.

iPhone 5 to iPhone 5S/SE (2012-2016)

With the release of the iPhone 5, Apple increased the screen size to 4 inches. This change reflected the growing consumer trend towards larger screens, which provided an improved viewing experience while maintaining the convenience of using the device.

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (2014)

A significant change occurred from iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which received 4.7-inch screens and 5.5 inches respectively. It was a response to the growing market for larger smartphones or “phablets”. This move is the first for Apple in a segment that has been actively developed by competitors such as Samsung.

iPhone X (2017)

In 2017, with the release of the iPhone X, Apple switched to a new design, reducing the bezels and introducing displays with cutouts. The iPhone X received a 5.8-inch screen, which became the golden mean between the two previous sizes.

iPhone XR (2018)

The iPhone XR retained the new design of the iPhone X, but increased screen size up to 6.1 inches.

iPhone XS Max (2018)

The iPhone XS Max was the first “Max” model released by Apple, with a 6.5-inch screen, making it the largest iPhone at the time. release.

iPhone 12 Pro Max (2020)

The iPhone 12 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display, making it the largest iPhone at the time of its release. exit.

iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini (2020-2021)

The iPhone 12 mini was introduced in 2020 and was the first model after the original iPhone SE, created specifically for users who prefer more compact devices. With a 5.4-inch screen, it was comfortable to use with one hand.

The iPhone 13 mini model continued this trend, but reports and market analysis showed that demand for such devices was relatively low compared to the larger iPhone models, and Apple no longer included such models in its lineups.

iPhone 15 Pro to iPhone 16 Pro (2023-2024)

This year, Apple introduced the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models with larger screens – 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively. These sizes are larger than the previous iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max models (6.1 and 6.7 inches), and also received thinner frames, improving the perception of the screen without significantly increasing the overall size of the device.
