NATO or North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) — this is an international organization that was created for the collective defense of the countries of Western Europe and North America.

How many countries are in NATO, what is the list of all countries in 2024, report Fakty.com.ua.

What is NATO

NATO (NATO) The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created on April 4, 1949. At that time it included 12 countries in Europe and North America. But as a result of ten rounds of enlargement (in 1952, 1955, 1982, 1999, 2004, 2009, 2017, 2020, 2023 and 2024), 20 more countries joined NATO.

In 2024, 32 NATO members are states (these are NATO allies) that are sovereign states. The task of these countries, within NATO, is to participate in the discussion of political and security issues, and to make collective decisions based on consensus.

Any European state that is capable of promoting the principles of the North Atlantic Treaty and contributing to maintaining security in the North Atlantic region, in accordance with Article 10 of this treaty, can join NATO. The decision to admit new members to NATO is approved by the North Atlantic Council.

North Atlantic Council — it is the highest political body of NATO.

All decisions in the Alliance are made on the basis of consensus. Each NATO member country has the right of veto.
