In a recent report that Le Figaro has obtained, the High Authority for Health (HAS) proposes a bold turn concerning gender transition for minors. The institution recommends that social security take charge of it for minors aged 16 to 18. A project that questions its social and family implications, in addition to intervening at a time when there seem to be other health priorities.
The HAS advocates for transition support, including cosmetic surgeries, hormonal treatments, and even hair removal sessions for young adults. For minors, this reimbursement could be effective from the age of 16, and thus give rise to direct support. A decision that shakes the boundary between individual freedom and parental protection.
According to the authors of the report, including activist figures such as Clément Moreau (transgender psychologist) and Nicolas Morel-Journel (surgeon), “gender transition is no longer a pathology” but a civic approach. An attempt at a radical paradigm shift, which could push young people into irreversible choices without sufficient psychological support. Especially since these new provisions could come into play in parallel with sex education imposed earlier and earlier at school, and with increasing insistence. It is difficult to escape it.
Through this proposal, the question of parental responsibility also arises. If a 16-year-old minor wishes to begin their transition and the parents oppose it, the situation can quickly become explosive. The HAS even provides for the possibility of withdrawing part of parental authority in the event of refusal. But can we really impose such a decision, at the risk of tearing apart the family balance ?
As pointed out by CNews, other countries are more cautious in this matter. Recently, the United Kingdom and Sweden have ended the prescription of puberty blockers for minors.
