Harry Potter: HBO CEO has bad news for fans waiting for the series

It is certainly one of the most anticipated TV series projects of the coming years: the adaptation for the small screen of the film saga of J.K. Rowling's work, Harry Potter. While HBO has just officially launched the casting of its future series, fans will have to face very bad news.

A Harry Potter series eagerly awaited by fans

Indeed, if there is a TV project that is extremely anticipated, it is the adaptation of the magical universe of Harry Potter imagined by J.K. Rowling into a TV series by HBO. Thus, after the films produced by Warner, it is the American channel that has announced its intention to bring the work of the British writer to the small screen. Last April, Warner Bros. Discovery had explained that it intended to cover the 7 volumes of the literary saga in a TV series by offering it as an exclusive for the streaming service Max but, recently, we learned that the adaptation would be stamped HBO Original. Still, even if the project has managed to find directors and screenwriters, for the moment, No release date has been officially announced. The project has always been set for 2026. Until today…

Very bad news for Harry Potter fans

And that's where the bad news comes in for all the fans of the young wizard with the round glasses and the scar on his forehead. In a recent interview with Deadline, Casey Bloys, president and CEO of HBO and Max, affirmed that the project was still on track and that Mark Mylod, director of Succession, had already started the adaptation in collaboration with different screenwriters.

Except that, for now, it was still too early to share with the public an official release date for the Harry Potter series. Initially, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said last February that the series was scheduled to hit our screens in 2026. Today, Bloys has a completely different story and announces that the Harry Potter series for HBO could instead see the light of day in late 2026 or sometime in 2027:

The writers have started. Mark Mylod has started. The crew, they're hiring department heads, casting, and off they go… We haven't announced any dates (…) We're looking at a late 2026-2027 release. The writers are just starting, so it's too early to talk about a release date.

From this interview with Bloys, we learn that the series will be directed by Mark Mylod, who will direct several episodes and serve as executive producer. Francesca Gradiner, a Succession alum, will serve as showrunner and executive producer as well. If HBO has decided to postpone the broadcast of the series, it is certainly because the channel knows that fans are waiting for it at the turn for the casting whose original is particularly appreciated by the public. And to discover which iconic character from the saga Cillian Murphy could embody in the HBO series, it's here.
