Guterres called for “détente and de-escalation” in the Middle East

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for maximum restraint when speaking on Sunday, April 14, at a meeting of the UN Security Council dedicated to the situation following Iran's attack on Israel.

Guterres reminded UN member countries that acts of retaliation using force are prohibited by international right.

"The Middle East is on the brink of an abyss. The peoples of the region are faced with the real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time for détente and de-escalation,”– the UN Secretary General emphasized, reports Reuters.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that further Israeli responses to the Iranian attack were inappropriate and that the United States would not take part in them.

Biden's remarks were reported on Sunday by CNN and the Wall Street Journal. A White House spokesman confirmed them to Reuters.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby also said on NBC on Sunday that the United States does not want the crisis in the Middle East to escalate.
