Global Meta Project: Laying a 40,000 km Submarine Cable

Meta is working on a project to lay its own submarine cable, over 40,000 kilometers long, that will connect the east and west coasts of the United States across the world. The company will be the sole owner and user of this line.

What you should know

Industry expert Sunil Tagare notes that the initial budget for the project will be $2 billion, but as it develops, the figure could increase to $10 billion. In addition, due to limited resources and their high cost, Meta may lay the cable in segments.

Meta already co-owns 16 existing networks, including the recently built 2Africa. Google has 33 such projects, and in some it is listed as the sole owner. Other IT giants, such as Microsoft and Amazon, do not have their own submarine cables, so they purchase capacity or act as co-owners.
