Germany has charged individuals suspected of spying for Russia

The Federal Prosecutor's Office of Germany has charged three men suspected of spying for the benefit of the Russian Federation. This was reported by the Spiegel publication with reference to representatives of the prosecutor's office.

The defendants have dual citizenship: German and Russian. The main suspect is a 40-year-old man from Bayreuth. He photographed military facilities and was also interested in railway traffic. Together with their accomplices, the suspects, aged 38 and 43, were monitoring facilities in the federal state of Bavaria.

According to the investigation, such facilities included the American military training ground in Grafenwehr, where Ukrainian soldiers are trained, as well as a tool factory near Bayreuth, where weapons are manufactured.

German security forces began monitoring the suspects in the winter and spring of 2024. The investigation concluded that the men could have considered the possibility of sabotage at German military infrastructure facilities. Possible explosions and arsons were also discussed. In this way, the saboteurs wanted to «blow up» military support for Ukraine from Berlin.

According to the investigation, the main accused had «excellent connections’ with the Russian special services. It is also alleged that the man once fought on the side of the so-called «DPR».
