Georgia's European integration is on hold as long as the Georgian Dream party is in power, says EU ambassador

EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Gerchinsky said that under the rule of the Georgian Dream party, the country will never become a member of the European Union.

The ambassador's statement is cited by Sova, as reported by European Pravda.

According to him, the Georgian leadership is distancing the people of the country from EU membership, despite their desire.

Gerchinsky considers granting Georgia candidate status to join the EU his greatest success in his diplomatic career.

“But what happened after you received candidate status? The majority of the population, the opposition parties want to join the European Union, but the government alienates people from membership in it. Members of the Georgian government are far from the values ​​of the European Union,” the diplomat noted.

He expressed hope that after the October parliamentary elections, Georgia would return “to the path to the EU, which has been suspended at this stage.”

Gerchinsky added that the EU is ready to resume negotiations with Georgia if it has a democratic government

“Unfortunately, I must tell you that under the current ruling party, Georgia will never become a member of the European Union,”  he summed up.

After the Georgian parliament adopted the scandalous law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence”, which is compared to the Russian law on “foreign agents”, the EU summit stated that this effectively suspends the process of Georgia's European integration.

It recently became known that the EU is ready to suspend the visa-free regime for Georgian citizens in response to the anti-democratic actions of the Georgian authorities and their anti-Western rhetoric.

In addition, the European Union decided to stop high-level meetings with representatives of the Georgian government.
