From real life.”You didn't try to please my parents”: My future husband accused me before the wedding

Sławek and I have been together for a year. We both work, we are young, promising professionals and we have the same outlook on life.

First we work and live for ourselves, then we can have children. But we were thinking about getting married. There was no rush, but there were such thoughts.

One day Sławek came home and said that his parents were insisting on meeting us:

-Mom says we've been together for a year, and I haven't shown you to her yet. It's not right – the young man told me.

-Why not? Let's meet up, then you'll finally be able to introduce us — I agreed immediately. After all, it would be nice to talk to the mother and father of such a wonderful person as my beloved. Sławek is really nice, which means he was raised by good people.

-Write me a shopping list, I'll buy everything for tonight — Sławek said, smiling.

-List? Why? For what evening? – I wondered. In my mind I tried on one dress, then another, imagining what outfit would be best for me to wear in front of my beloved's parents.

-What, you cook dinner, and I'll invite my parents – replied Sławek. What a trick! So instead of a nice meal in a nice restaurant, my beloved suggests I get dirty in the kitchen?

I immediately said that the meeting should take place on neutral ground. Slawek was clearly nervous. I didn't quite understand why. Maybe he wanted to impress his mother with my culinary talents. But I have no talents. I am moderately neat at home, although I don't demand a medal for cleanliness. And the days when mothers-in-law judged their daughters-in-law based on their household skills are long gone.

Overall, although my beloved was nervous, he agreed to meet at a restaurant. By the way, I think it was a very successful meeting. No one asked me uncomfortable questions. I was sure that my future husband's parents had welcomed me well. Imagine my surprise when it turned out that this was not the case.

-You weren't trying to please my parents – said Sławek – my mother noticed it right away and said it was wrong.

-And what exactly made her think that? – I asked with even greater surprise.

-First of all, you didn't even try to hide the fact that you refused to set the table at home – he said reproachfully. What nonsense my mother-in-law allowed herself to say, and most importantly, that Sławek agreed with her.

-Second, you said that you don't like to exert yourself. You said that you prefer to buy vegetables at the store than to slouch in the garden – he continued with the same condemnation in his voice.

Time passed, and my grudge was forgotten. Then my mother-in-law invited us for dinner. Then I understood what it meant to try to please. My future mother-in-law was definitely trying to impress. And, in my opinion, she wasn't even ashamed to lie. She cooks first, second, and third courses every day. She starches the sheets. Their home decor is gorgeous.

My mother-in-law immediately boasted that her husband had made everything with his own hands, down to the tiles. And the dumplings that my mother-in-law served were, of course, handmade. And then I thought – it's great when people want to please you. After all, my mother-in-law also made me three kinds of desserts – everything I like. And she gave me a present – a gold-plated pendant. So let her try – she has already managed to satisfy me.
