From real life. “We gave our daughter and her husband half of our house”: It was the worst decision of our lives

At first, everything was going well.

Giving half of our house to my daughter and her husband was meant to be a gesture of love and support. After years of work and sacrifice, we wanted them to have an easier start in life. We thought it would make them happy and allow us to enjoy a peaceful old age in the close company of our family. We never thought that this decision would become the beginning of a nightmare that would separate us forever.

At first, everything was going well. They were renovating their part of the house, and we watched with pride as they built their place on earth. The smiles, the laughter of the children – everything seemed so perfect. But then the changes began. In small steps, almost imperceptibly, our home stopped being shared.

„Mom, Dad, you have to move your cars– it started with little things like that. „Guests have nowhere to park.” We moved it, even though it wasn't convenient. Then came the next requests – quiet, but increasingly demanding. „Can you use the back entrance?

We want to keep the front ones just for us.” We agreed, not wanting to get into a conflict. After all, it's their home as much as ours, right?

But we soon started to feel like intruders in our own place. „Maybe you could sell your part and find something smaller?– my daughter suggested one evening. We were speechless. Did they really want us to leave? I looked at my husband, his face betraying the same amazement and pain I felt.

„Why would we do that?– I asked, my voice trembling.

„Because it would make everyone’s lives easier– she replied with such calm, as if she was stating something obvious. “We need more space, the kids are growing, and you don't need that much space anyway.”

That evening, for the first time in my life, I felt that my daughter had become a stranger to me. My husband tried to explain that it was impossible, that the house was our stronghold, our life's work. But she just shrugged, as if it didn't matter.

In the weeks that followed, things got worse. Arguments began. Her husband, who had been silent until then, suddenly began to make accusations. „You don't understand that you are blocking our future. ? You are selfish!– he shouted, and I couldn't believe his words.

Selfish? We gave them half of our home, we sacrificed so many years for them, and now we were put in the role of enemies.

One day we found some documents on the table. „We want to buy out your share,– my daughter said unceremoniously. „This is the best solution for everyone.”
I looked at the papers in disbelief. „You want to throw us out of our house?– I asked, tears in my voice.

„Not throw us out, just help– she replied coldly. „You'll be able to find something quieter, closer to the city. It's for your own good.”

We couldn't agree. But since then, our life has turned into hell. Every day we heard slamming doors, raised voices, and even accusations that we were “making life difficult”. Our home became a battlefield, and we felt like prisoners.

Today I sit in the kitchen, looking at the blank walls. There's no laughter or shared moments here anymore. My husband says we should sell our share and leave, but I can't accept it. This house is our life, our memories. We gave them half out of love, but we never thought it would destroy our family.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have made a different decision. Maybe if we hadn't been so generous, our family would still be together. But now it's too late. We built this house with love, and out of that same love we let it all fall apart.
