From real life. “We considered everything again and changed our minds”: My mother said and demanded the return of the apartment

My parents are quite wealthy people.

My dad has a good job and my mom also contributes significantly to the family budget. At the same time, I was always raised with the attitude that money doesn't fall from the sky and I have to work hard for it. I wasn't spoiled with expensive and unnecessary gifts like some children. Instead, we went on vacation twice a year and ate well.

A significant part of the family budget was invested in my education. Clubs, sections, even if I needed an expensive gadget for college, a subscription to a program or an application – everything was bought. My dad and mom always believed that you should think about the future, it's bad to be thrifty and live for today.

In general, I agree with them, which is why I never asked for anything more than what I already got. When I got married, I didn't even expect to get an expensive gift. I preferred to bet on it being rational and useful. And that's exactly what happened. In the middle of the wedding, when congratulations were pouring in one after another, my dad took the floor and announced a gift for the newlyweds. My parents gave us an apartment!

My husband and I were in shock beyond words. I thought our parents would only give us money, but I had no idea we would get the whole apartment! Mom and dad have two other apartments besides the one they live in. My mom inherited one from her parents, and they bought the other one themselves. This property has always been positioned as a contribution to a future retirement.

“In retirement, you can't just go for a walk! We'll rent apartments and be able to afford to go to a sanatorium at least once a year!” – my mother liked to dream. The apartments were rented all the time. You can't say it's a lot of money, but it was also a significant increase in income.

The apartment was registered in my father's name, and he set a condition that he would officially re-register it in our name only after ten years of marriage! This is the clause with an asterisk. Of course, it was unpleasant, but as they say: he who pays, plays. We had to agree. We definitely don't intend to get divorced. Love and all that. We were allowed to completely rearrange the apartment, because we intended to live in it. And the following weekend, we, the happy newlyweds, moved from our rented apartment to my dad's apartment.

We decided to invest some of the money we received for the wedding into renovations. After all, there had been tenants living there for many years, and the apartment had become worn out. And we wanted to at least choose the wallpaper ourselves, something we liked. After a month of dust and dirt, the apartment was transformed. We made cosmetic repairs and refreshed some of the furniture. My husband and I were happy! Three months later, my mother called me and asked me and my husband to come over after work to talk.

My husband and I never expected how this invitation would turn out. My parents demanded that we move out of the apartment! I was so shocked that I even had to ask if I had heard wrong… “We analyzed everything again and decided that we had acted irrationally. It turns out that you have deprived us of another source of income, and we have already become accustomed to a certain level of prosperity. You are young, you will earn money for the apartment yourself!” – said my mother.

The last sentence was deeply embedded in my ears. I had heard it before. My mother-in-law, my husband's mother, had told us this hundreds of times. She did not like the gift from my parents. After the wedding, she insisted for a long time that we should have refused the gift.

Now we have two weeks to move out of the apartment in which we invested half of our wedding money. There's nothing to talk about — our parents ruined us…
