From real life. “On New Year's Eve, my brother admitted that he had been cheating on his wife for years”: She immediately asked for a divorce

It was almost midnight.

New Year's Eve was supposed to be a joyful holiday, full of laughter and hope for the new year. We all gathered at the family home – my mother, brother Tomek with his wife Magda, their children, and me with my husband and daughter. The table was heavy with delicacies, music was playing in the background, and children were running around the house, laughing loudly. The atmosphere was warm, until the moment that changed our relationship forever.

It was almost midnight. We were toasting, enjoying the last minutes of the year. Tomek, as always the center of attention, was loud and funny, but his gaze betrayed something else – as if he was hiding something that was finally bothering him.

When the clock struck midnight, we all hugged each other and exchanged best wishes. It was then that Tomek suddenly stood up and raised his glass, as if he wanted to say something important.

– „Dear ones, before we start this new year, I have to confess something. Something I've been carrying around with me for a long time.”

A silence fell in the room. Magda, his wife, looked at him with a slight smile, unaware of the approaching storm.

– “Magda, everyone, I want to be honest with you. I did something I'm ashamed of, but I have to face it.”

Magda frowned, and we all held our breath.

– “I've been cheating on Magda for a few years now.”

The words hung in the air like a bomb. Magda stood up, as if electrocuted.

– „What did you say?!” – her voice was quiet, but full of disbelief.

Tomek lowered his gaze.

– „I'm sorry, Magda. It was a mistake, but you have to know that it's over now. I want to start all over again.”

Her face paled. She looked at him like she didn't understand what she had just heard.

– „You've been cheating on me? For years? And you're telling me this now, in front of everyone?!”

Tomek tried to approach her, but she backed away from him as if his touch burned her.

„I don't want to hear your apologies! You ruined everything! Our whole life was one big lie!”

The family froze. My mother tried to say something, but Magda wouldn't listen.

– „I want a divorce, Tomek. There's no future for us.”

– „Tomek looked at her with despair.

– „Magda, please, give me a chance. It was a mistake, but I still love you…”

– „You love? This is how you show love?!”

Magda ran out of the house, and Tomek followed her, begging to talk. We were left in silence, trying to process what had just happened. The children, unaware of the drama, were playing in another room, but I knew that this New Year's Eve would change our family forever.

Magda returned a few days later, but only to take the children. She filed for divorce, and Tomek was left alone. He tried to fix his mistakes, but it was too late. Magda could not forgive him for years of lies and betrayals.

Today, their marriage is a thing of the past. Tomek regrets his confession, but I know that the truth had to come out eventually. Sometimes one confession can destroy an entire life – but it can also be the beginning of something new. Will Tomek learn anything from this lesson? I don't know.

I only know that this New Year's Eve will be a memory for our family that no one wants to repeat.
