When Kamil came home one evening, he was clearly upset.

I always knew that my mother-in-law, Mrs. Krystyna, had a strong character. She was a person who liked to control everything around her – from the small details of family gatherings to the important decisions that should have been mine and Kamil's. But despite her domineering nature, I never thought she would go this far.

When Kamil came home one evening, he was clearly upset. He threw his briefcase on the table and sat down in silence, avoiding my gaze. Concerned, I sat down next to him.

– “What happened, Kamil? You look depressed.”

He was silent for a moment, then sighed heavily.

– “Mom… asked me for a favor.”

That one sentence was enough to set off alarm bells inside me. My mother-in-law never asked—she demanded. I took his hand, trying to get more out of him.

„What favor? Kamil, what’s going on?”

„I signed something… something that was supposed to help her get through her financial troubles. But I didn't tell you because I knew you'd get upset.”

My heart started beating faster.

– „You signed something? What exactly?!”

Then he pulled a stack of documents out of his briefcase. I read them with trembling hands. It turned out that Kamil had signed a power of attorney that allowed his mother access to all of our savings. The entire sum we had saved up over the years for our shared dreams – a new house, a vacation with the kids, securing our future – could now be used by her.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I looked at Kamil in disbelief.

„How could you do that?! It’s our money, Kamil! Why didn't you tell me?!”

– „Mom said it was just temporary. That she needed the money to pay off her debt and then she'd pay us everything back.”

I stood up abruptly, feeling the anger growing inside me with every second.

– “And if he doesn't pay it back? How could you be so naive?!”

The next day I decided to confront my mother-in-law. When I entered her apartment, she was sitting at the table as if nothing had happened. Her calm expression only fueled my anger.

– „Mrs. Krystyna, how could you do this? How could you force Kamil to give you our money?”

Her face remained impassive.

„Ania, this isn't just your money. This is a family matter. And Kamil, as my son, should support me. You don't understand that.”

– „I don't understand? These are our savings, hard-earned by both of us! How could you put me in this situation?”

Her voice suddenly turned cold.

– „Ania, family is an obligation. If you can't help me, what kind of people are you? Don't be so dramatic. Everything will return to its place.”

I returned home shaken. Kamil tried to calm me down, but his attempts only irritated me. I knew I had to act before it was too late. I contacted a lawyer to see what our options were. It turned out that revoking the power of attorney and blocking access to the account was possible, but required immediate action.

A few days later, my mother-in-law found out the documents had been invalidated. She called me, furious.

– “How could you do that, Ania? You ruined my plans! Kamil should have put his family first, and you're manipulating him to hurt me!”

– “I'm not manipulating, Mrs. Krystyna. I'm protecting our family. It's not your place to decide about our money.”

Since then, my relationship with my mother-in-law has been strained, and Kamil has finally realized how much he betrayed our trust. This experience has taught me that even in the closest family there have to be boundaries. Family is support, but not at the cost of losing respect and security.
