From real life. “My husband and I live with his parents”: I don't work, so I can't buy anything

Living with my husband's parents wasn't as easy as I had imagined at first.

I don't work, so all the household shopping is under their control. They do all the shopping, and I'm not allowed to buy even the smallest thing. “Tell me what you need and we'll buy it,” my mother-in-law keeps saying.

At first glance, it seems like help, but in reality, I feel trapped. I can't even leave the house to go to the store. I can only ask for every little thing. One evening, while sitting at dinner, I decided to talk about it.

-Mom, Dad, can I go to the store by myself? I just want to get some fresh air and buy something for the house – I started. My mother-in-law frowned.

-Why go there? We'll buy everything ourselves, you don't have to worry – she replied sternly.

-But I want to choose my own food, see what I'm buying – I tried to explain. My father-in-law looked at me reproachfully.

-This is a waste of time. We care about you, that's why we do everything ourselves – he said. I realized that my words had no effect. A sense of hopelessness was growing inside me. After dinner I went to my room and felt tears streaming down my cheeks.

That evening my husband came. He sat down next to me and took my hand.

“I saw how hard it was for you at dinner. I'm sorry I didn't intervene,” he said quietly.

“I just want some freedom to go to the store by myself,” I whispered, holding back tears.

“I understand, honey. I'll try to talk to your parents and explain to them how you feel,” he promised, hugging me.

Over the next few days, my husband really tried to convey my feelings to his parents. Gradually, they began to give me more freedom. The first time I went to the store by myself was special. It was a small victory, but it gave me hope. I realized that with my husband's help, I could achieve more.
